GM Flies Under The Radar With Trump
As I’ve noted a few times before, Trump loves bashing on Ford. The Detroit has highlighted a point I’ve also mentioned before: Ford is hardly the only automaker setting up small car production south of the border. General Motors somehow has flown under the radar with Trump, even though it has invested quite a bit in its Mexican operations lately. Maybe Trump has deep respect for CEO Mary Barra?
Part of GM’s $800 million global small car initiative involves retooling its factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Combined with another facility in Mexico, it will start churning out Equinoxes, some of which will end up in the US.
Maybe it’s that GM is being craftier than Ford about everything. The Detroit News pointed out that when announcing the next-gen Equinox production, GM said it would happen in Canada and two other places, leaving Mexico out of the release entirely. It’s interesting that such an announcement didn’t rile Trump, because Canada is another country and that’s supposedly taking jobs away from Americans.
As a side note, Fiat Chrysler also has multiple factories in Mexico. Trump hasn’t said anything about them, as far as I know.
Even though Hillary leads in the polls, this election has been crazy so far and could have a crazy conclusion. If Trump does win, Ford might want to take a few pointers from GM about how to deal with the situation.
