German Authorities Zero in on BMW for Diesel Emissions

Volkswagen, FCA, and Daimler aren’t the only ones to be under the gun for possible diesel cheating. The company’s headquarters in Munich were raided by German authorities. Austrian police searched a manufacturing plant in Steyr, according to an Automotive News report.

Investigators think BMW developed its own emissions cheat device. That sounds familiar. After Dieselgate, other automakers have been accused of using similar cheats. So far, there’s been no evidence of the device, but police aren’t exactly turning over all the evidence collected. BMW, of course, denies it did anything wrong.

Not too long ago, BMW recalled 11,000 vehicles, saying they had the incorrect engine management software installed on them. This raised quite a few eyebrows, and it might’ve caught the governments’ attention.

While this might not turn into anything, it could be another signal that diesel for passenger cars is in trouble. To think that diesel engines for cars and even SUVs will be available in the coming years probably is wishful thinking. I know plenty of diesel fans don’t want to hear that, but things don’t look good when you have multiple automakers accused of cheating on emissions tests.
