Ford Proves Its Trucks Are Safer

If you think that full-size pickups are automatically safe vehicles, you might want to think again. IIHS recently tested four popular models. Only one, the 2016 Ford F-150, was given the Top Safety Pick award.

The other three trucks didn’t do so well on the small overlap test. That’s been the case with a lot of vehicles, like the first-gen Mazda CX-9. The Toyota Tundra, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado just didn’t perform nearly as well. Apparently being built Ford tough isn’t just a slogan.

Back to that small overlap crash test. IIHS says that the other three trucks held up so poorly, drivers would need to have their legs freed after the collision. In other words, they probably wouldn’t walk away from the wreck, literally.

You might notice that the 2016 F-150 isn’t a Top Safety Pick+. To get that rating, a vehicle has to be offered with at least an optional forward collision warning system, plus get an “advanced” or “superior” rating for its own test. The truck’s system only earned the “basic” rating.

It’s not like the other trucks that have a forward collision system did any better. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra both earned the same “basic” rating in the test.

Expect that Ford, Fiat Chrysler and GM will take these crash tests seriously. Likely they’ll tweak the trucks, because these kinds of results aren’t good for business.
