Ford Outlines Changes for the 2016 Mustang

The 2015 Ford Mustang has been a massive success, as Ford saw 12,663 units find new homes in March and 13,144 in April. With the changeover to the 2016 model year just around the corner, Ford has outlined some of the changes in store for the new model year.

The Mustang GT and Ecoboost will both be available with over-the-top stripes on most color and trim packages. Also available on these two models is a painted-black-roof option, which we last saw on the Boss 302 package.

The 2016 Mustang Ecoboost Premium will have its own exclusive package available. Known as the Pony Package, this upgrade will include 19-inch polished-aluminum wheels, a tri-bar pony logo on the grille, side stripes, and chrome window surrounds.

On the Mustang GT fastback and convertible, there will be an optional Black Accent Package, which will add in 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels, a black deck-lid spoiler, dark taillight trim, and black “5.0” and pony logos.

Exclusive to the Mustang GT Premium will be the California Package. On the inside, this package will add in premium items like ebony leather-and-Miko suede seat inserts with red contrast stitching and an embossed logo, exclusive door panel inserts and premium carpeting, and a unique aluminum dashboard finish with a “California Special” badge. On the outside, this California Package will add in 19-inch ebony-painted aluminum wheels, hood and side stripes, a black pedestal spoiler, a special faux gas cap, a strut-tower brace with “California Special” badges, dark taillight accents, black-painted mirrors and hood vents, a performance front splitter, and an exclusive grille with a tri-bar pony logo.

Also new for 2016 is a Performance Package for the convertible Mustang GT. This package will improve the GT Convertible’s handling by way of special a strut-tower brace and K-brace, a larger rear sway bar, heavy-duty front springs, 19-by-9-inch front wheels paired with 19-by-9.5-inch rear wheels, a more aggressive front splitter, and specially tuned stability control, ABS and electric power steering. Ford also adds in Brembo six-piston front calipers for increased stopping power. Other Mechanical updates include a larger radiator and a Torsen limited-slip rear axle with a 3.73 ratio. There is one aesthetic upgrade included in this package, and that includes an aluminum instrument panel with auxiliary gauges.

Two final changes for the 2016 model year include a new Sync 3 system for models equipped with the Premium Package and hood-vent-integrated turn signals on the 2016 Mustang GT, which pay homage to 1967 Mustang.
