Back in the good ol’ days (2005) you could buy a Ford supercar for well under $300,000 even if you added options. Times have changed, and with that change comes the sad truth: anyone who wants the new Ford GT is going to need to pony up even more. Ford announced that the supercar will carry a starting price of $400,000, which will go up quite a bit once taxes, fees, underbody rust protection and dealer badge charges are factored in.

The good news is buyers will be getting something extra for the big price bump. The car comes with styling that will make Ferrari owners secretly admire it. Not only does the body look dramatic and futuristic, it’s also seriously aerodynamic. Under the skin is a lightweight structure made of aluminum and carbon fiber. It also packs a 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that pushes out over 600 horsepower.

Some Ford fanboys are inevitably disappointed by the steep price tag for the Ford GT, maybe even completely disillusioned. After all, it’s a far cry from the cost of a Shelby GT 500 and even makes the old Ford GT look pretty affordable. The only thing that could make the pain any worse would be for Honda to announce U.S. pricing for the NSX at about $150,000.

At least the Ford Focus RS is pretty affordable.

Ford is pretty smart and knows that pricing the GT at $400,000 puts it out of reach for a lot of people. It has announced that production will be capped at 250 units per year. If you think about it, Ford’s still being pretty generous, at least when you compare things to the Porsche 918. Not only did the German supercar carry a premium starting price of $845,000, production was kept to just 918 units worldwide. Of course, buyers can just go with a 911 Turbo S and get 560 horsepower, all for under $200,000, but it’s not an American supercar, which is what really counts in some people’s book.
