Fiat Chrysler Thinks It Can Outdo Tesla
FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne doesn’t think much of the Tesla Model 3 or its 400,000 reservations. While speaking to reporters in Amsterdam, the fiery Italian who’s known for saying all sorts of things cast doubt on the future of the affordable EV.
Instead of being shocked by its huge reveal, Marchionne said he wasn’t surprised at all. What he doubts is that Tesla can deliver the Model 3 and actually make money.
Fiat has a bad history when it comes to EVs. The company lost about $14,000 with each 500e sold. Marchionne even asked people to not buy the compliance car. A little case of envy might be coloring his opinion of Tesla’s chances.
In a really weird twist, Marchionne went on to say that he’ll beat Tesla at its own game. He said that if the Model 3 does well, the he would copy the competition, “add Italian style” and have a production vehicle on the market within a year.
No, this isn’t a joke. Marchionne means every word of what he says, so let that sink in for a moment.
While Marchionne is spewing off this new set of rhetoric about the Tesla Model 3, he’s also continuing to play matchmaker. Possible FCA merger candidates this time include VW, Ford and Toyota. GM already told Marchionne which bridge to jump off, and Ford just shot down the idea. Apple is still apparently in the mix, even if the tech company isn’t taking FCA seriously.
