Way before the BMW i3 came around, Mini was toying with the idea of releasing an EV. The brand went so far as to create the Mini E, laying the groundwork for what would become the i3.

From the sounds of a new report from Autocar, Mini doesn’t want to play second fiddle to BMW. Not only do the Brits want to put out a production version of the Rocketman, they’re seriously considering an all-electric powertrain.

Basically, the Rocketman is a viable production car if it’s electric. The reason is that the car would be truly small, made possible by the more flexible layout of batteries and electric motors. Everyone who hates how big and bloated modern Minis have become should be excited about this possibility.

Expect the BMW i team to be fully embedded in this project, if it moves forward. Right now it’s just in the planning stages, so nothing’s official.

The rumor train is also speculating that Mini will also put the Superleggera Vision roadster into production. Supposedly, the car would also be an EV. Considering that Mini has seen a sales slump lately, and the kind of people who would be interested in the brand like the idea of owning an EV, this could be a smart move.

Not only that, having a car that can be driven through a shopping mall, hotel and all sorts of other indoor spaces, all without emitting any tailpipe emissions, would be a blast.
