Ferrari — and all supercar manufacturers for that matter — is hard at work trying to find ways to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. This sudden need for thriftier and cleaner cars stems from a more Eco-friendly public and government entities trying to limit cars’ environmental impact. In an attempt to meet these new requirements, Ferrari is slowly moving toward turbocharging.

It began with the new California T, which uses a new, twin-turbo, 3.9-liter V-8 to push the convertible’s output to 560 horsepower and 557 pound-feet of torque. This is a nice bump from the outgoing, 4.3-liter V-8’s output of 453 horsepower and 357 pound-feet of torque. On top of that increase, Ferrari is also expecting a 15-percent bump in fuel economy and a reduction in emissions. And now, a report from Car Magazine outlines even more details on Ferrari’s upcoming plans for turbocharging.

The report claims that Ferrari is working on a turbocharged V-6 to power a smaller sports car slated for a future release. This engine is reportedly a 2.9-liter V-6 that uses a pair of turbos to push its output around 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

The report goes on to claim that this engine will likely grace a new, smaller, and cheaper version of the upcoming 458 successor. This would work directly into the desires of Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa, who prefers his new cars lighter, nimbler and more compact than the ones before it. This new car would likely target China and other emerging markets.

For now, this report remains unconfirmed, but all the information seems to align with the current trend in the supercar world. We’ll bring you more details and rumors about the possibility of a V-6 Ferrari as they roll out.
