Demand for the Ford GT Far Outweighs Supply

When Ford unveiled its GT at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the response to it assured the newest American supercar would be a smash hit. Recently, Ford unlocked the GT’s configurator and opened its books for preorders, resulting in interest that is more than 14 times its anticipated supply.

Ford plans to build just 500 examples of its new GT, 250 per year for two years, which is dramatically less than the 4,000 units the blue oval built in the GT’s previous generation. According to a report from AutoCar, the preorder system has resulted in more than 7,000 applications to purchase the GT—yes, you have to actually apply to buy the GT. A good portion of these are likely people who can’t even afford the car, but even if half of them fall into this category, that is still a massive gap between supply and demand.

Despite the better-than-expected demand, Ford has no plans to expand production beyond the 500 it has already allotted. Ford has also promised that it will be super-selective in who it chooses to own a GT and it comes as no surprise that previous ownership of a GT is a big factor.

More information should start coming out as we near the production date for the 600-plus-horsepower, V-6-powered GT. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long as it is slated to roll off the production line sometime this year. Keep it locked here for additional details.
