It’s been in the works for some time, but Chevrolet has finally unveiled the 2016 Cruze with its larger, redesigned body and updated lineup of engines. These updates are sure to push the brand’s best-selling global model even higher up the sales charts.

On the outside, the Cruze is completely different from every possible angle. This new look makes the economy sedan seem sportier, and its 2.7-inch-longer body makes it seem like a more premium car than ever before. A benefit of this new look is better performance in the wind tunnel, as the new Cruze has a super-low 0.29 coefficient of drag, which will help in delivering great mpg and reduced wind noise.

Despite being a good bit larger than its predecessor was, the 2016 Cruze is about 250 pounds lighter. This reduction in weight is partially thanks to the use of high-strength steel in the body, which increases rigidity by 27 percent and drops 53 pounds of heft. Additional lightweight materials, like aluminum suspension components, make up the rest of the weight savings.

Under its hood, the 2016 Cruze features a standard 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. As standard, this engine will mate to a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed auto gearbox. The result is acceptable acceleration of about eight seconds to 60 mph and an outstanding 40 mpg rating on the highway.

For those of you wondering about the diesel engine, Chevy plans to add this in the 2017 model year. It will be the same 1.6-liter that GM uses in other markets around the world, not the 2.0-liter diesel it used in the last-generation Cruze.

On the inside, the Cruze makes good use of its lengthened body and 106.3-inch wheelbase, as it now has 36.1 inches of rear legroom and an extra 2 inches of knee room in the rear. The Cruze also has a redesigned dashboard that adds a little shapeliness to the interior.

Some of the standard features in the 2016 Cruze include soft-touch surfaces and a 4.2-inch driver-information center. For buyers who need more, there is also available premium cloth upholstery, leather seating with french stitching, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and more.

The 2016 Cruze will hit dealers in early 2016, and pricing will roll out as we near this release date.
