Can the 2017 Sentra SR Turbo Be the New SE-R?

Years ago, Nissan was right in the thick of the performance compact world with its Sentra SE-R. It was one of my favorite sleeper cars, particularly the first gen (I had a 1993). But after its elimination in 2013, it seemed like this was the end of Nissan participating in this class. Today, Nissan shows it still has a little something up its sleeve with the Sentra.

Folks, I introduce to you, the 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo. Sure, it is no SE-R, but its extra power and tighter handling make it the next best thing.

In terms of power, this sedan makes use of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque – no so surprisingly, this is the same output as the Juke Nismo. That gives this model 62 more horsepower and 52 more pound-feet of torque than the non-turbo Sentras. Buyers can pair this boosted engine with either a six-speed manual transmission or an Xtronic CVT.

Nissan has also upped the performance factor of the SR Turbo model with an enhanced body structure, an updated steering system, and larger disc brakes up front.

Nissan has yet to announce the on-track specs of this midrange performance compact. My rough guestimate would be a 0-to-60 time in the mid-six-second range, given the heavier Juke Nismo does the same in 6.9 seconds.

Rounding out the Sentra SR Turbo are some tweaks to its appearance. These include LED low-beam projector headlights, LED headlight accents, side-sill extensions, a rear spoiler with an LED brake light, a chrome exhaust tip, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, this model boasts sport interior trim, premium sport cloth seats with heat up front, and a 5-inch Advanced Drive-Assist Display.

Buyers looking for more features can add the SR Turbo Premium Package, which adds blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, leather seating, and a Bose audio system with eight speakers.

Nissan hasn’t revealed pricing yet, but I assume the SR Turbo trim will have a healthy price hike over the SR trim, which ran $21,240 in 2016. The SR Turbo will hit showrooms in the fall of this year.

Could this be bait to see just how well a true SE-R model would do? It wouldn’t shock me, but only time will tell!
