The days of the M2 are already numbered, at least according to German BMW news site. It claims that the car will be killed off by BMW in 2020, essentially making it a limited edition vehicle. The move is probably to help make the M2 feel more special, which would be a similar strategy as the 1 Series M.

While it might seem weird, the BMW M2 hasn’t even been launched on the open market, yet the car already has an expiration date.

BMW has invested quite a bit into the M2, which promises to please enthusiasts who are upset about the softening of the brand’s performance models. The car is powered by a brand-new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which incorporates M TwinPower Turbo technology. Output is excellent, with BMW claiming a peak 370 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque. Thanks to an overboost function, torque can increase temporarily to 369 lb.-ft.

It should be noted that BMW often understates these kinds of figures. The company says that with the standard six-speed manual transmission, the M2 goes from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Opting for the M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) shaves off 0.2 seconds from that time. Thanks to an electronic limiter, the little car can’t push past 155 mph. For those who think that’s too slow, there is an optional M Driver’s Package that raises the limit to 168 mph.

As BMW Blog points out, the M2 is actually made on the same assembly line in the Leipzig plant as the 2 Series Convertible/Coupe, the 2 Series Active Tourer and the 1 Series five-door. That being said, only a tiny fraction of the production volume will be the M2.

Of course you’re probably wondering what a great driver’s car like this will set you back. Unfortunately for now we’re not sure, because BMW hasn’t officially released pricing for the United States. It has said that in the domestic German market, the coupe starts at 56,700 euros, which at the exchange rate when this was written makes it just a hair over $62,000. As the spring 2016 release date nears, an official price will be revealed.
