BMW Reveals The 3.0 CSL Hommage

BMW went retro recently when it revealed the 3.0 CSL Hommage at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The Bavarians paid tribute to the 3.0 CSL, a car that’s considered one of the most classic and revered models from the company’s past.

For now, the 3.0 CSL Hommage is simply a concept. The BMW Design Team went all-out, creating a vehicle that draws significantly off the source material, while still incorporating plenty of modern themes.

The acronym CSL stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau or coupe, sport, lightweight. True to its name, the concept is made largely from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. At different points, the advanced composite material has been left exposed so onlookers can be wowed. Various BMW i and BMW M models have structural parts made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.

Also making a bold statement is the Golf Yellow paint, which is one of several details that tie the concept to the original car. The laser headlights each have an “X” in the center, hearkening back to the racecars of old. In the rear, the vehicle has a roof spoiler and other details that tie directly to the original design. Still, there’s enough new touches to make the 3.0 CSL Hommage look attractive in today’s market.

Some have complained that the front grille is too large and that the front fenders wrapping over the hood looks too odd. Such designs could be critical to the car’s operation, considering that a mysterious inline six-cylinder engine with eBoost is housed under the hood.

Of course, the interior is luxurious and sporty. The driver and passenger sit in racing bucket seats with quilted leather upholstery. As a concept vehicle, there are also some outlandish touches, such as the small U-shaped steering wheel. In the rear portion is a cross member shaped like a “V” – making it appear like a portion of a roll cage.

There’s no doubt about it, the 3.0 CSL Hommage is an interesting vehicle to behold. You can see it in action in the video below, including hearing the engine fire up.
