As the replacement to the 1 Series Convertible, BMW has just revealed its new 2 Series drop top. Relative to the 1er it replaces, the 2 Series convertible is 72 mm (2.8 inches) longer and 26 mm (1 inch) wider, and its wheelbase is 30 mm (1.2 inches) longer. With the extra size, BMW was able to enhance the space in the cabin and increase its luggage capacity by 35 liters (1.2 cubic feet) to 335 liters (11.8 cubic feet).

Going from coupe to drop top takes only 20 seconds. What’s more, the driver can perform this function at speeds of up to 30 mph. With the top up, the revised materials help reduced the cabin noise by 4 db.

In terms of design, the new 2 Series convertible carries on the new BMW look. This includes a bold and slightly forward-leaning kidney grille, twin-circular headlights that narrow as they approach the grille, and a long hood.

In the UK, BMW will offer four versions of the 3 Series Convertible with four different engines. The 220i Convertible will come standard with a 2.0-liter engine that cranks out 184 horsepower and 270 Nm (199 pound-feet) of torque. This model can hit 62 mph in as little as 7.5 seconds and tops out as high as 144 mph. The 228i M Sport carries a 245-horsepower and 350 Nm (258 pound-feet) version of the 2.0-liter engine that helps the model hit 62 mph in as little as six seconds and top out as high as 155 mph. The M235i Convertible boasts a 3.0-liter inline six TwinPower Turbo engine that produces 326 horsepower and 450 Nm (332 pound-feet) of torque for a 0-to-62-mph sprint of as little as five seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

For those looking for a little more thriftiness, there is a 220d Convertible, which uses a 2.0-liter 190 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 pound-feet) of torque. This unit allows the 2er drop-top to hit 62 mph in as little as 7.4 seconds and up to a 140 mph top speed.

U.S. specifications are not yet available, but I think it is safe to assume that the all but the diesel engine will be available on this side of the pond.

In terms of pricing, the 220i comes in at £29,180, the 228i M Sport checks in at £31,550, the M235i starts at £37,710, and the 220d bases at £29,965. The new drop top hits showroom floors on February 28, 2015.
