BMW is Reportedly Working on a New Supercar With McLaren
McLaren and BMW are no strangers, as they teamed up to create the iconic McLaren F1. In their initial meeting, BMW provided the engine and McLaren wrapped it up in a sexy body. Now, rumors are swirling that BMW and McLaren will soon team up again. This time, however, reports indicate that both BMW and McLaren will gain a supercar from the deal.
The report, which comes from CAR Magazine, claims that the BMW supercar will make use of a mid-mounted 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 750 horsepower. Helping push the small-displacement V-8 to that insane amount of horsepower are four turbochargers. Two of these turbos are exhaust driven, while the other two are electrically driven.
Fortunately, reports claim that the two supercars spawned from this mating of German and British engineering will be visually different.
With a production year penciled for 2018 or 2019, this would give the two brands time to tweak their designs to make them more modular. The likely scenario would include McLaren creating the carbon-fiber monocoque and both brands creating body panels to mount to this lightweight shell.
CAR claims that the two automakers will share chassis and suspension components, but with bespoke calibrations.
In terms of pricing, the report claims that we’ll be looking at an entry fee of at least £150,000 ($232,688). This would put it about in line with other entry-level supercars.
Despite the specific nature of this report, most of the details surrounding the McLaren-BMW supercar are unconfirmed. So, I don’t suggest holding your breath for this one.
With a release date not too far off, we should start getting more leaks and reports in the coming months. Stay tuned for all the latest details.
