The Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S are likely the best things to come from Mercedes’ tuning arm in, well, forever. In fact, in a recent interview with Car and Driver, AMG chairman Tobias Moers said that the GT S is the “pinnacle of his two-decade career at AMG.” Those are pretty big words considering some of the awesome metal to come from AMG in his time, specifically the SLS. However, I do see his point, as Moers is a true petrol-junkie who will take face-ripping performance over plush features any day, and that is what the GT and GT S are relative to the SLS.

In speaking to Car and Driver, Moers was expectedly open with details, as he confirmed what we all suspected were coming: a GT Convertible and a GT Black Series. However, following that confirmation came a side topic that was not expected, as he said “Before the Black Series, there will be a nice car.” The initial thought is a GT3-style car, but Moers made it seem as if that was not on the table for now. Instead, it appears as if this will be a car that sits between the GT S and the Black Series.

What this car will actually be is a complete mystery, but given Black Series cars are typically street-legal race cars with all the aero bits and performance goodies cranked up to level 12 or 13, expect this new car to follow a similar path but at a lower level. Whether or not this new car and the GT Black Series can coexist remains to be seen, but it seems like a narrow niche to fill. The only way I can see it working is if it is a limited-run vehicle that is launched well before the Black Series comes to market.

Given this gap filler is expected to arrive within two years, look for details to start popping up in the next 6 to 12 months. We’ll fill you in as these details start rolling out.
