2018 Ford Expedition Drops Pounds and Gains Style

While the rest of Ford’s lineup has morphed and become more modern, the Expedition sat back and waited its turn. Now, with the 2018 model year coming up fast, Ford has finally released the completely redesigned Expedition.

This new three-row SUV rolls in with all sorts of new goodies, starting with a brand-new look. While it’s still quite large, it now takes some cues from the current Explorer – most notably its grille and headlights. Also new is its high-strength aluminum-alloy body to reduce weight without compromising safety. It also boasts a new high-strength steel frame for even more weight loss. All told, the 2018 Expedition drops up to 300 pounds.

Inside, the cabin is also completely restyled and more comfortable than ever. In here, buyers will find room for up to eight people, but its flexible seating quickly adapts to changing needs. The second row of seats not only slide, but they also feature a tip-and-slide function that gives wide access to the rear seats – you can even activate this feature with a car seat installed (without a baby in it, of course).

Cargo hauling is also a breeze with the flat-folding second and third rows. What’s more, these rows fold at the push of a button, so there is no crazy pulling of straps and forcing seats forward. This area is wide enough to fit a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood.

The 2018 Expedition is also higher-tech than the previous generation, too. It rolls in with available active park assist, a 360-degree camera, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Sync 3, Sync Connect, four 12-volt power points, six USB chargers, a 110-volt outlet, and a 12-speaker B&O Play audio system.

Also available is an advanced cargo manager, which is an adjustable shelf behind the third row that creates a custom storage space and prevents items from rolling out, even when parked on a hill. Finally, there’s an available panoramic sunroof that crosses over two rows of seats.

Under the hood of the 2018 Expedition is the EcoBoost 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6. There are no output specs just yet, but I bet it matches the current F-150’s 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Like the F-150, the new Expedition uses the brand’s new 10-speed auto transmission. Helping in the slippery stuff is a new electronic limited-slip differential on four-wheel-drive models.

Look for the 2018 Expedition to hit showrooms in the fall of 2017. Stay tuned for updates.
