Your Ford Fusion Steering Wheel May Detach

Don’t panic, but if you drive a Ford Fusion, the steering wheel might completely detach. It’s not a big deal, because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is totally looking into it. So if this happens to you in the meantime, just remember to stay calm.

According to Automotive News, the NHTSA investigation could affect 841,000 Ford Fusions from 2014 to 2016 model years. So far, three have reportedly experienced the steering wheel bolts loosening. One steering wheel came off completely, but no injuries were reported.

Per NHTSA protocol, which isn’t the quickest thing, a preliminary investigation is the first step. If investigators have any doubts, they’ll proceed with an engineering analysis. Depending on the results, it can either close the case or issue a recall.

This issue comes after Ford recalled 1.34 million trucks because the doors could suddenly open at speed. One big question is if these problems will douse Ford’s big sales upswing?

It wouldn’t be the first time a new automotive CEO’s efforts to rally the troops is in part undone by the transgressions of a predecessor. Investors and customers may just dismiss everything as a symptom of why the change in leadership was necessary, which is how GM has been able to push forward after the ignition switch scandal.
