VW To Axe Tens Of Thousands Of Jobs
You can thank the steep cost of the Dieselgate emissions scandal. You can thank electric cars, which have fewer components. Whatever you want to blame it on, Volkswagen is looking to slash about 30,000 jobs worldwide.
The vast majority, about 23,000, will be from Germany, VW’s home, per a Motor Authority report. Before you have visions or all those German workers holding pink slips and crying, you should know Volkswagen is looking to reduce its workforce organically.
What that means is the 30,000 job cuts should mostly come as people leave the company for various reasons, or they’re offered early retirement. Since VW was incredibly forthcoming throughout Dieselgate, we can definitely believe there won’t be mass layoffs.
On the flip side, Volkswagen is looking to create about 9,000 jobs worldwide in growth areas. These positions would be dealing with new technologies. That makes sense, since the whole world economy is moving in that direction.
