For the Wörthersee event, Volkswagen has unveiled yet another wild concept in the form of the VW Golf GTE Sport Concept. This plug-in-hybrid hatchback takes everything about the hot-hatch segment and flips it on its ear.

Under its hood, the GTE Sport concept is packing the same 1.6-liter TSI engine that the Polo R WRC rally car uses, but its power output is tuned to deliver 220 kW (295 horsepower) and 400 Nm (295 pound-feet) of torque. Chiming in to help are two electric motors; one mounted in the six-sped dual-clutch transmission and the other in the rear axle. Both motors put out 85 kW (114 horsepower), while the front motor puts out 330 Nm (243 pound0feet) of torque to the rear motor’s 270 Nm (199 pound-feet). Total torque chime in at 670 Nm (494 pound-feet) of torque.

At full tilt (in GTE-Mode), the GTE Sport Concept can hit 62 mph in just 4.3 and top out at 174 mph. This mode gives the GTE Sport a total output of 395 horsepower and the aforementioned 494 pound-feet of torque.

The E-Mode allows the driver to travel up to 31 miles on a single charge. When the battery depletes, the system automatically changes to Hybrid-Mode, which has two stages: Battery Hold and Battery Charge. Battery Hold retains the charge of the battery and save it for when you really need it. The Battery Charge mode actively charges the battery via regenerative braking and a coasting feature that uses the motors as generators.

The looks of the GTE Sport are rather extreme, particularly the interior. VW Split the cabin into two monocoques – one for the driver and one for the passenger – with racing seats ad carbon-fiber-weave five-point harnesses. The driver also has access to buttons to his right that control the transmission, the drive mode, and other special controls.

The exterior resembles the Golf, but the GTE Sport takes its design to a whole new level with exposed carbon fiber on the roof, the lower door portions, the rear bumper, rear diffuser, the front splitter, and the mirror caps.

There is no mention of a possible release date for this vehicle, and we aren’t;’t likely to hear one any time soon.
