Video Evidence Proves That a Diesel F-150 is in the Works

Despite Volkswagen’s recent dieselgate scandal, these torque-heavy engines are starting to pick up some steam in the U.S. By “steam,” I mean folks are finally willing to even consider these one-time rap-tap noise buckets as alternatives to fuel-thirsty gasoline powerplants.

Much of the reason diesels have gained some cred in the States is the fact that manufacturers have found new ways to keep them quiet and increase their output. Today, new video evidence (below) shows that the recent success of the one-and-only Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has inspired Ford to add diesel power to its F-150 lineup.

In the video below, which was likely takes place somewhere in Michigan, it is clear that this F-150 has something new under the hood. Spewing from the exhaust tip is the telltale note of a diesel powerplant, leading folks to believe the F-150 will gain an oil burner of its own in the 2017 model year.

The exact details behind this engine remain uncertain for now, but the consensus concludes that this will be a 3.0-liter V-6 borrowed from the Land Rover Range Rover. Given this ends up being true, and the specs carry over from the Range Rover, look for the diesel-fueled F-150 to produce 254 horsepower and a very stout 440 pound-feet of twist.

Shifting duties will be the responsibility of Ford’s new 10-speed auto transmission that, when paired with this efficient diesel engine, will help the truck reach at least 30 mpg.

If this model is to hit showrooms as a 2017 model year, look for it to join the auto-show circuit later this year. We’ll bring you all of the details once they become available.
