Vacuum Cleaner Company Dyson Is Making A Car

Thanks to The Guardian, we now know that Dyson is working on making a car. That’s right, the same company that makes expensive vacuum cleaners, fans and those nifty Airblade hand dryers is going to jump into the auto market with a new battery-electric model.

I could make a joke about the future EV sucking, but that would be pretty silly. Instead, I’ll admit that Dyson is a pretty innovative company. After all, the Airblade does a great job of not leaving my hands all wet after using a public restroom, and the vacuums revolutionized that industry. Applying that level of ingenuity to a vehicle could result in something pretty compelling (the key word here being “could”).

For those who don’t know, Dyson bought Sakti3, an American battery company that’s toying with some pretty revolutionary tech. Basically they figured out how to get double the life of even the most advanced lithium-ion batteries out there. The biggest thing holding electric cars back is range and recharge time, and both are affected largely by batteries. Dyson itself has a great track record creating efficient and reliable electric motors.

According to The Guardian’s report, the British government is helping fund the project. It’s sinking about $245 million USD, including a $22.54 million grant.

So there you go, Tesla’s most viable threat yet could be a company that right now is famous for making vacuums.
