In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, Donald Trump has a bone to pick with Ford. He’s mad the automaker wants to manufacture cars in Mexico. Plenty of other automakers have been using Mexican labor, but Trump thinks American companies should keep all the jobs here.

During the first presidential debate, Ford tried to finally defend itself on Twitter. That was after a year of being portrayed as anti-American. Now, the strategy seems to be placating Trump, just in case he wins. Considering how close this election has been, anything’s possible.

Bill Ford Jr., the Co Executive Chairman of Ford, met personally with Trump, according to a report from Time. This meeting wasn’t recent, but apparently happened a few months ago. Even though Ford has tried to say everything went well, Trump has continued to rail against the company.

It gets even better, because Ford told Time that Trump “knows the issues” was “thoughtful” and “asked good questions.” Trump repeatedly has said Ford’s shipping jobs south of the border, casting the company as a destroyer of the local economy.

Even though Ford has confirmed no workers in the US will be laid off, but instead will be kept onboard to manufacture more expensive vehicles, the damage has been done. If Trump is elected, he’s swearing to raise huge tariffs to make building cars in Mexico too expensive.
