Toyota pulled the veil from the Prius Prime, which is the plug-in hybrid version of the new-gen Prius, back in March. At that time, it had hammered out all of the specifics of the car, including its features, looks, output, and more. Some of the most important specs, however, were only manufacturer estimates, and those were the all-telling economy numbers. Today, we learn the official numbers, and they are far different than what Toyota initially predicted.

When Toyota first revealed its newest plug-in model, it predicted the 121-horsepower Prius Prime would deliver a respectable 120 mpg-e and up to 22 miles of electric-only driving. Well, it turns out this new rig will actually get a whopping 133 mpg-e and travel up to 25 miles on electricity only. Getting a full charge takes only 5 ½ hours on a standard 110-volt outlet and two hours on a 240-volt source.

Also important is hybrid mode, as this is the mode that most commuters will use on the tail end of their trips to work. According to the EPA, the Prius Prime will get 55 mpg city and 53 mpg highway which are increases of 4 mpg city and highway. This fuel economy combined with the electric range puts the total range of this new rig at 640 miles.

To help preserve the range in colder temperatures, a battery heater comes on after a charge cycle to keep it above 32 degrees F. Additionally, the Prius Prime will keep its occupants warm even in extreme cold, as the heat pump can run without the engine at temperatures as low as 14 degrees F.

Also announced was pricing for the 2017 Prius Prime was pricing. It will come in three trims, Plus, Premium and Advanced, and they will run $27,100, $28,800, and $33,100, respectively. This, of course, does not include the $865 destination fee.

Toyota has yet to officially announce the exact arrival date for the Prius Prime.
