The Revival of the Supra is Getting Closer to Reality
It’s well known that BMW and Toyota are working on a joint sports car, but the specifics behind it have been a little murky. While we have seen it previewed by the sexy FT-1 concept, the name remains a mystery. Toyota added fuel to the speculation fire with the renewal of its Supra trademark in the U.S. in 2014, and today, a new trademark finding tosses a few gallons of gasoline on the Supra fire.
The latest filing was found by the sleuths over at the SupraMKV forums. This time around, Toyota trademarked the Supra name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. It is listed as a Class 12 filing, which is for “Vehicles; apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water.”
While this may seem like a reason to celebrate the impending arrival of the new Supra, I suggest you temper your enthusiasm a bit. Keep in mind that automakers file new trademarks and renew old ones all the time, and oftentimes, nothing ever comes of them. Yes, there are loose regulations that prevent automakers from creating “placeholders,” but there is little burden of proof of production intent put upon the automaker.
Regardless of my skepticism, this is a pretty cool development that does add to the growing possibility that the Supra could return.
We’ll continue to monitor this situation and bring you updates as they become available.
