The Next Subaru WRX Might Not Have a Flat Four
When I think of the Subaru WRX, the boxer engine is one of the first things to come to mind. A new report from Autocar claims the iconic engine might not be offered on the new model, which is due in 2020. The world would no longer be flat.
Maybe you’ve already guessed it, but increasing emissions standards would make a flat engine no longer practical.
Mamora Ishii, design head at Subaru, told Autocar that what people really want out of the WRX and other vehicles is symmetrical all-wheel drive. Maybe he’s right, but I guarantee hardcore fans won’t like it.
We don’t know what would replace the flat-four. Could it be a more traditional internal combustion engine? That would be insulting. A hybrid system? More likely. There’s an outside chance of a fully-electric powertrain. We’ll just have to wait and see as 2020 draws nearer.
