The New G-Class Will Have An Independent Front Suspension
Not too long ago, there was talk that Mercedes would turn the G-Class into some sleek, sporty SUV. People were outraged that such an icon would go from boxy and beautiful to looking like everything else on the road. Now that we’re learning the G-Wagen will use an independent front suspension, that hardly seems like a big deal, at least in comparison.
This information is coming from Automotive News, which received intel from the man in charge of the G-Wagen line. The SUV is also getting bigger, growing four inches in width for a more commanding stance.
Just because some changes are coming doesn’t mean the G-Class will be altered completely. Mercedes heard the cries of people around the globe, and so is keeping the SUV boxy. It’s supposed to retain the “charm” that’s made it a favorite of off-roaders and shoppers on Rodeo Drive. That means Mercedes is sticking with a body-on-frame construction, plus a set of low gears, and three locking differentials. In other words, it should still be able to hit serious trails and embarrass Jeeps, if owners dare get it dirty.
