The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is Taking Shape

Mercedes has been hard at work trying to develop a competitor to tackle the shockingly successful Porsche Panamera. Autobild spoke with an unnamed source from within Mercedes who gave the German magazine a ton of insider info on the upcoming super sedan.

According to the report, the GT4, as Mercedes calls it today, will be based upon the same underpinnings as the next-gen CLS-Class, which means it’ll share its body structure and wheelbase with the sleek four-door coupe. However, the report goes on to state that it will adopt more of its actual physical traits from the GT and the Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

Additionally, Mercedes will shorten the overhangs a bit on the GT4 and it will use lightweight aluminum to make it lighter than the CLS. This, combined with its adaptive suspension, electronic diff, and carbon-ceramic brakes will give it a personality all its own.

To set itself further apart from its CLS and E-Class platform mates, the GT4’s interior will be tailor made and more generous.

Under the hood of the GT4, Autobild’s sources say to look for a retuned version of the 4.0-liter biturbo V-8. Expect this unit to produce around 500 horsepower in its base model and upward of 600 ponies in its S version. Expect a 0-to-62 mph sprint in the mid-three-second range.

Though the details surrounding this super sedan are becoming clearer, we are still a long ways away from its reveal. According to Autobild’s sources, Mercedes isn’t planning to release the new sedan until 2019. Pricing should fall somewhere between €120,000 and €140,000 ($129,187 and $150,718).
