The Nissan Rogue has gotten some not-too-hot press over the years, thanks to its blah looks and uninspiring powertrain options. Recently, it underwent a redesign that took care of some of the appearance issues, but it still lacked style and the powertrain remained iffy, at best. Today, Nissan unveiled the 2017 Rogue, which boasts a refreshed appearance and a new powertrain option.

While the stylistic changes are not dramatic, they are noticeable and they give the small crossover a more aggressive look. The V-Motion grille is bolder than ever and it has a gloss-black surround that makes it stand out even more. The headlights are larger and restyled, the grille has an all-new insert, the fog light surrounds are wider, and the lower grille has new vertical slats that widen the front end.

Rounding out the outward changes are the new 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels, available motion-activated liftgate, and three new colors.

Inside, the 2017 Rogue gains a restyled front center console, new trim, new material for the cloth seats, a D-shaped steering wheel, and a new sport mode shifter with a leather boot.

On the features side of things, the Rogue’s cabin gains a few new available features, including a heated steering wheel, memory seats and mirrors, heated cloth seats, and a remote starter.

In addition to the new features and add-ons, the 2017 Rogue has three new option packages that spruce things up even more. These include the Sun and Sound Touring, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve packages.

On the safety side of things, the new Rogue has gained a ton of new features to help keep you, your passengers, and those around you safe. These include Intelligent Cruise Control, Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and high-beam assist.

Finally, the Rogue gains a new, hybrid powertrain. This new unit uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 30 kW electric motor to crank out a total of 176 horsepower. Regenerative braking and a dual-clutch transmission help maximize its fuel economy, pushing it to a projected 33 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined with front-wheel drive.

While this engine won’t be any more spirited than the standard 2.5-liter that carries over from 2016, at least it gets far better gas mileage.

There is no mention as to when the 2017 Rogue will debut, but Nissan does say that the hybrid model will launch by the end of 2016. Stay tuned for updates.
