The 2017 Mini Countryman Is Large And In Charge

If you’re like the average person, you haven’t been paying much attention to Mini these days. The brand has been making its cars bigger, and now it’s the Countryman’s turn. That’s an interesting move, because the Countryman was already pretty big, at least for a Mini.

The 2017 Countryman leapfrogs the 2017 Clubman as the largest Mini ever created. You can shake your head in disbelief, but the company needs sales in a big way, and it knows people don’t really want tiny cars. After all, how do you fit a week’s worth of Trader Joes food in a small cargo area?

Like the 2017 Countryman, the new Clubman is sharing a front-wheel-drive platform with the BMW 1 Series (all-wheel drive is optional). That means it’s powered by the TwinPower Turbo Technology three-cylinder engine. The same engine is used in the current Cluman, and in John Cooper Works form it really rockets the car forward with a fury. Trust me, after driving the 2017 Clubman I was shocked at how well it handled, like a really big go-kart.

The real question is if a bigger, more SUV-like Countryman will get people onto dealer lots. To sweeten the deal further, a plug-in hybrid version of the car is coming, just in case you want to conserve fuel while conquering nature in a quirky British way.

The 2017 Countryman will make its public debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. After that, the car should hit dealerships in early 2017.
