The 2016 Honda Civic Coupe Breaks Cover
Honda already wowed everyone by showing off the 2016 Civic Sedan, and now it’s the coupe’s turn. The company used the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show to get people excited and lining up.
You may notice that the Civic Coupe matches the front end of the sedan version exactly. Where the differences especially come out is the tail, where a “signature-C” taillight LED bar hearkens to the original Battlestar Galactica, except that the light fades out in the middle for an interesting effect. Instead of huge tailpipes, they’re almost hidden behind the bumper for a cleaner appearance.
While the exterior looks pretty athletic, the car’s also 1.9 inches wider. The wheelbase has been extended 2.9 inches, but overall length was cut down by 5.5 inches. Adding to the sportier look is a roof height that’s 1.4 inches shorter.
Even with all that scaling back of the exterior dimensions, Honda says the interior gains 8 cubic feet of space. Even more important is the fact that actual people might be able to sit in the rear seat, thanks to an additional 5 inches of legroom. In other words, you can get your sporty econo vehicle and still enjoy haul around your friends on the weekend.
The same platform was used for the Honda Civic Coupe as the sedan version. It’s supposed to be much more comfortable and handle dramatically better. Honda’s also touting an interior that’s far quieter than before, something you usually associate with luxury models but that’s becoming more common in mainstream vehicles.
Just like the sedan, buyers will be able to choose between the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder i-VTEC engine that puts out 158 horsepower and 138 lb.-ft. of torque. The turbocharged 1.5-liter is also available on the upper trims, with 174 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. While neither one will push you hard against the seats, remember that the Si and Type R are still waiting in the wings.
Official pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but expect a range that will mirror the sedan’s. In other words, it probably will go from reasonable to pushing near-luxury.
