Tesla is getting ready for the release of the Model 3 over the course of the next year or so – if it remains on schedule. As expected, the EV manufacturer is simplifying its lineup a bit before the new entry-level model debuts, and one of its first moves was to cut the 60D version of the Model X without any sort of announcement.

It’s not much of a surprise to see this base model disappear, as the same thing happened with the Model S once it was established and selling well. Oddly enough, however, Tesla ended up bringing back the Model S 60 earlier this year. I highly doubt the Model X 60D will return, though.

So, how can Tesla afford to cut and reintroduce a model with a smaller battery without absorbing a ton of cost? Well, that’s because the 60 kWh version of the Model S and X both use a 75 kWh battery (the same as the midrange Model S and X), but with its capacity electronically limited. So, there is really no extra cost in adding or deleting this version of both vehicles.

While this may not cost Tesla and money, it can potentially put Model X buys out an extra $10,000, as that is the price difference between the old base-level model and the $85,500 Model X 75D, which becomes the new base model.

We’ll continue monitoring the shifting of Tesla’s lineup in anticipation of the Model 3’s arrival. Who knows, maybe the Model S 60 is the next model up for elimination (again!). Stay tuned for updates.
