A Tesla is finally competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, something that incredibly hasn’t been done until now. Back in 2014 a Tesla Roadster did the Race to the Clouds, but that’s been the only other Tesla to take on the grueling road course. A P90D model is supposed to be the only EV in the production class, and it’s causing a big stir all over the place.

Some sources are claiming that Blake Fuller of Go Puck, who will pilot the car, has outfitted the Model S with a special lightweight battery pack. Considering that Fuller’s other company, called Braille Battery, makes super lightweight and high-performance lithium-ion and AGM batteries, that doesn’t sound too far flung.

The big question is if such a change would fall within the production class requirements. According to officials, few modifications are allowed. Electrek was able to refute claims that Fuller is making a battery pack that’s 80 percent lighter than the stock one in the P90D, which was originally reported by Carscoop. In other words, there are lots of rumors about what this EV is packing, and most of them are probably false.

With a 13-minute record for the Electric Production class at Pikes Peak, Fuller and his Model S have their work cut out. We’ll see if he has some tricks up his sleeve after all.
