The sixth-generation Ford Mustang has received a ton of press as of late. First was the unveiling of the new body and independent rear suspension; then came the introduction of the Shelby GT350 Mustang; and finally came the even more intense Shelby GT350R Mustang. Now, the latest to come from Ford and Shelby is the 2015 GT, which is based upon the 2015 Mustang GT.

Unlike its GT350R brethren, the 2015 Shelby GT is more of a straight-line monster than the GT350R. Not to say that the Shelby GT can’t handle the twisty stuff thanks to the new independent suspension that the base Mustang GT comes with, but with 627 horsepower at its disposal, it’ll certainly prefer the straight stuff over the curves. If you’re doing the math at home, that’s a healthy 192-horsepower gain over the Mustang GT’s standard tune.

So, how was Shelby American able to squeeze that many ponies from the Coyote V-8? By way of a monstrous supercharger, of course. On top of the blower sitting atop an otherwise-stock 5.0-liter V-8, Shelby also tosses in a Borla exhaust system with oval Shelby tips, Ford Racing half-shafts, a 3.73 rear-axle ratio, and a Ford Racing short-throw gear shifter.

For those of you who need even more power, there is a performance upgrade that turns the 5.0-liter’s wick up to 700-plus horses. Unfortunately, Shelby did not disclose what helps add in the extra ponies.

Keeping the Shelby GT glued to the ground is a combination of aero work and suspension upgrades. On the aero side of things, Shelby adds in a carbon-fiber front splitter, rocker panels, two-piece rear diffuser, and trunk-lid spoiler. The suspension and chassis upgrades include a Ford Racing handling pack with upgrade shocks, springs and sway bars, 20-inch Shelby Venice wheels by WELD, Michelin rubber sized 275/35R20 up front and 305/30R20 out back, and a Willwood performance brake upgrade.

Of course, no Shelby GT would look right without its fair share of tastefully added look-good bits. The 2015 GT includes a carbon-fiber hood with customizable vents, carbon-fiber mirror covers, customizable billet-aluminum upper and lower grilles, Shelby GT striping, Shelby GT badging on the front grille and C-pillars, a Shelby faux gas cap, “Powered by Ford” fender badges, and a “SHELBY” lettering kit. Inside the cabin, the look-good bits include Shelby-branded headrests, a CSM dash plaque, a carbon-fiber dash with three gauges, Shelby GT door-sill plates, and Shelby-branded floor mats.

There is also a mile-long options list that buyers can pick and choose from to customize their GTs to their likings. These options include things like custom interiors, Recaro seats, carbon-fiber intakes, and more.

In total, the base 2015 Shelby GT kit run $39,995, not including the Mustang GT donor car. With the base 2015 Mustang GT starting at $33,195, that would put the total base investment at $73,190.
