Reworked Mustang Convertible Gets its Day in the Sun

Recently, Ford unveiled its revised 2018 Mustang coupe. Despite still being relatively fresh, it received a healthy restyling. Now, Ford has revealed the drop-top model.

Like the fixed-roof version, the Mustang convertible has a reworked nose to include a lower hood, updated upper and lower grilles, and repositioned hood vents to enhance aerodynamics. The front end will also gain all-LED lighting (signature, turn signals, low beams, high beams and available fog light). Around back, are new LED taillights, a restyled bumper and a new fascia. Buyers will also notice new dual-tip exhaust on EcoBoost models and quad-tip exits for V-8 models.

Inside, just like the coupe, the droptop will gain a hand-stitched wrap on the center console, padded knee bolsters, aluminum-finished door handles, rings and bezels, new patterns and color options on the restyled seats, and an updated Mustang badge on the instrument panel. Other changes include a new key fob design and an optional heated steering wheel.

Today, covers come off the new Ford Mustang convertible – America’s best-selling sports car – as it kicks off a tour of more than 50 regional auto shows across the country before going on sale in North America this fall.

On the tech side of things, there is a new 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster available, MyMode with memory to save your preferred driving setting and new safety features, such as pre-collision assistance with pedestrian detection.

The powertrain also gets a nice update. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder gets a boost in torque and becomes the new base engine – the 3.7-liter V-6 is dead. The 5.0-liter V-8 also sees upgrades, as it is more powerful and revs higher than any Mustang GT before. Ford will likely release the specifics on these two engines in the near future.

Both engines will have an optional 10-speed auto transmission. This new gearbox features quicker shift times, better low-speed tip-in, unique tunes in various drive modes and real-time shift scheduling for changing conditions.

Finally, there is a new optional MagneRide suspension for improved agility.

The 2018 Mustang will hit showrooms in the fall of 2017. Prices will come at a later date.
