Mazda is working to spread its new-generation Kodo design language across its lineup. This spreading of the new look started with the new CX-9 and the tiny CX-3, and apparently, it’ll move over to the CX-5 in 2017, as Mazda recently announced that it’ll reveal the new-generation CX-5 at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The details on the resigned CX-5 remain under lock and key, but Mazda did release a teaser image that confirms a few things. The most obvious detail in the darkened teaser image is that the front end will be virtually identical to that of the CX-9, including the longer nose with the more forward-leaning grille. It also features widened headlights and a more aggressive hood – all cues from the CX-9.

The back end also pulls in the new Kodo design. The details are less obvious here, but it is clear that the rear hatch is far more rounded than the current CX-5, something both the CX-9 and CX-3 feature. Down the sides, the only real details I can make out it the large scallop in the bottom of the front door and the swoopier roofline.

The powertrain remains unknown at this time. I would love to say that Mazda is planning a small-displacement turbocharged Skyactiv engine for the new CX-5, but I cannot say for sure. The CX-9 already dispelled the popular myth that a Skyactiv engine with a turbo is impossible, leading me to believe that there are more turbocharged Mazdas coming.

We’ll soon find out exactly what the 2017 CX-5 has in store or us, as the LA Auto Show opens to the press on Nov. 14, 2016.
