Car Recalls
Prepare For A Huge Wave Of Airbag Recalls
Think your car escaped the massive Takata airbag recalls? You might want to think again.
Reuters says US regulators think about 85 million more airbag inflators might be downright deadly. That means you could be driving along, get into a minor fender bender, and have the inflator cut your jugular so you bleed out in a few minutes.
Not a pretty way to go.
In case you haven’t been keeping track, about 30 million airbags in the US have already been recalled. So another 85 million is huge.
If you think this whole mess is going to be resolved quickly, it’s not. The current batch of recalls is taking some dealerships months to resolve. That means car owners are forced to make a tough decision: drive a car that could kill them at any moment, or garage it and drive something else until the replacement parts come in.
Some dealers are nice enough to pay for rentals. If you’re under 25 or don’t much insurance coverage, that could mean trouble with qualifying for the rental vehicle. This means a lot of dissatisfied customers at dealers all over. With even more recalled vehicles coming down the pipeline, it might become even harder to get a rental in the near future.
People are estimating Takata could pay $3.5 billion for the airbag recalls. That’s definitely not good for the company. Honda, Toyota and others have sworn to not use Takata airbag inflators anymore, making it even worse.
