Owner Blames Model X Crash on Tesla
You might’ve seen some scary, alarmist reports about a Tesla Model X that accelerated out of control and hit a building recently. For those who don’t suffer short-term memory loss, it sounds eerily similar to the Model S that crashed all by itself into a trailer while the owner was in a store.
Are the robot cars trying to kill the humans?
Both owners blamed Tesla, but the automaker isn’t having it. With this latest Model X incident, the owner’s wife was parking when he claims the SUV accelerated by itself, hitting a nearby building. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt or killed.
Teslarati, a Tesla enthusiast site, got an official statement from the company. After looking over the vehicle logs, Tesla disputes the claim that the driver didn’t hit the accelerator. AutoPilot and cruise control were both switched off. That means it all came down to driver error, plain and simple.
Back in the 1980s people claimed Audis had a mind of their own and accelerated out of control. Some New York City garages went so far as to ban the German cars from entering. Toyota was also blamed for similar incidents not too long ago.
Thanks to the “black box” that’s onboard all Teslas, the company can tell that the driver pushed down on the accelerator pedal “100 percent” or all the way to the floor. Considering it was a P90D model, the electric SUV can accelerate with a fury, which is exactly what happened.
