Not Everyone Loves That VW Will Be An Electric Car Force
Thanks to Dieselgate, Volkswagen might be forced into participating in the electric car revolution. Some big EV supporters thought it would be the perfect solution to a company polluting the air with a bunch of cheating diesels, but the move might backfire in a big way.
You see, VW is huge, like the biggest automaker in the world right now. As it starts to create and deploy electric car chargers, existing car charging companies are concerned about the consequences. Reuters is reporting that many industry players want an independent third party to make sure Volkswagen plays nice.
What’s the risk with letting VW do whatever it wants with vehicle chargers? Not everyone uses the same standard, so if you have one brand of vehicle you can’t use certain public chargers. Volkswagen could squeeze out competitors, and the fear is it could actually end up hurting the image of electric cars. Others think that the market should be allowed to do its thing, VW included.
So there you have it, you can force an automotive giant into the EV game and still end up making EV fans mad. If you ask me, this whole situation highlights the fact there needs to be a charger industry standard, and maybe this is how it will come about.
