The Nissan GT-R is nothing short of an amazing piece of automotive engineering, but it is getting a little long in the tooth. Sure, its powertrain is still as awesome as it gets, but its styling and the technology under its hood are nowhere near as incredible as when it debuted in 2009. So, we are all anxiously awaiting the introduction of the next-gen GT-R, but apparently, Nissan is in no rush to roll it out.

Early reports indicated that the new performance coupe would arrive as early as 2017, but those were quickly squashed and a new estimate of 2018 came to the surface. Today, we learn that we may be looking at 2020 before the next GT-R rolls out.

This report stems from a conversation Nissan Australia managing director, Richard Emery, had with Motoring.com.au. In this conversation, Emery said that the next GT-R is “not on the horizon” at this point, and 2018 or even 2019 don’t seem realistic.

Nissan does have a few plans for the current GT-R, as an insider told Motoring that Nissan would temporarily stop production of the GT-R in mid-2016 for updates. This lull in production would give engineers the time they need to tweak the GT-R’s chassis to meet the tightening safety regulations in the U.S. There is no mention of how long the GT-R will go out of production, but I would figure six months to a year should be plenty of time.

We’ll continue to monitor the latest on the next-gen GT-R and bring you any updates as they become available. As of now, it looks like we shouldn’t hold our breath for the redesigned super-coupe.

Stay tuned for more details.
