New Toyota Supra Gets The Heart Of A Lexus?
We keep getting bits and pieces of information about the return of the mighty Toyota Supra. What’s already been established is that the car will be the product of a cooperative agreement with BMW, meaning it will share a platform with the Z4’s successor. The latest rumor is that the engine will be coming from Lexus.
Autoblog thinks that the much-speculated twin-turbo V-6 engine that’s supposed to be in the next-gen Lexus GS and LS will also be powering the Supra. According to multiple reports that cite unnamed insider sources, output will be at least 400 horsepower.
This would be an appropriate setup for the upcoming Supra, despite not being an inline-six. Toyota can’t just put a somewhat powerful engine in the car, considering the current Mustang GT pushes out 400 horsepower. Developing a new engine just for the Supra is probably too expensive, even for Toyota.
For the car to live up to that legendary status it enjoys these days, it has to blow the doors off the competition. Of course, that means more than just a powerful engine, but I’m sure BMW and Toyota are crafting a platform that’s pretty well balanced.
