New-Generation Camry to Debut in Detroit

The Toyota Camry is a legend – there is really no other way to put it. Sure, it’s about as vanilla as a car can get, but it is constantly near the top in sales in its class. Recently, the Japanese automaker has announced that it’ll completely redesign its flagship sedan for 2018.

Along with the announcement came a single teaser image. This image doesn’t show much, as it’s only of the rear, passenger’s side quarter. What we can make out are brand-new taillights that are thinner and feature LED tubes for the brake light, a clear center that likely houses the turn signal and backup lights, and a graphic that swoops downward to meet what looks to be a nearly vertical air outlet that extends toward the bumper. The air outlet that connects to the taillight is a clear styling cue from the new-gen Prius’ long taillight.

Also clear in this teaser image is a new-look rear end that features a more coupe-like taper of the rear glass and pillars. Could it be that the Camry will enter the growing four-door coupe realm? While this would be an unexpected change for the long-running sedan, the image doesn’t lie. Other new cues are more aggressive body creases that give the sedan a sportier look.

The rest of the details remain unknown for now, but Toyota will unveil the 2018 Camry at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. You can watch the unveiling live here on Jan. 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.

Stay tuned for updates.
