The mid-engine Corvette has been a rumor since Zora Arkus-Duntov roamed the grounds at GM, screaming from the rooftops that Chevy’s sports car should have a mid-mounted engine. Now, all signs point toward Zora’s dream becoming a reality in the near future, as mid-engine Corvette mules have been spotted testing at a not-so-secret GM facility. Today, Car and Driver has some juicy new details about this rumored rig.

According to C&D, the mid-engine C8 corvette will arrive in time for the 2019 model year, and we will get our first look at it at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. This initial version will feature a variant of the existing pushrod V-8 that’ll crank out between 450 and 500 horsepower. According to the sources, this rig will check in at around $80,000.

Following its first model year, Chevy will launch a new 32-valve, four-cam V-8 that will sit behind the seats of the C8 Vette. There are no details on its specific output, but it should be significantly higher than the debut model, which will result in the C8’s price tag creeping up to the $100,000 range. What’s more, the report also claims that Chevy will release an E-Ray Corvette that features the 32-valve engine and a front-mounted electric motor for even more extreme performance.

For now, this all remains one big rumor, but the evidence is blinding at this point. We’ll bring you updates as they become available.
