More 7 Series Models Coming, Including the M7
When BMW released the details on the 2016 7 Series, some folks were shocked at the limited drivetrain selections. According to a report from Car and Driver, you can all rest assured that there are more engine options coming soon.
At launch, the 7 Series will be available in only two flavors in the U.S., the 740i and the 750i xDrive. The former will come with a 320-horsepower 3.0-liter straight-six engine, while the latter will arrive with a 445-horsepower, twin-boosted V-8. Sure, the lightweight construction of the new 7 Series makes better use of these two engines, but buyers want more.
The report claims that sources within BMW said that there would be a few diesel engines available for the 7er, some of which will inject more than 300 horsepower in to the big Bimmer. The sources also said that a twin-turbocharged V-12 would power the soon-to-be-announced 760i.
The pink elephant in the room remains the much-anticipated M Performance version of the 7 Series. According to this report, there was some hinting of this model and the fact that it could be the first M model to make use of mild hybridization to increase its output. There’s not much else to report on this model, but the addition of an electric motor could be cause for celebration for some, while others may see it as a reason to start a riot.
Also mentioned is there will likely be a new Alpina B7 with a twin-turbo V-8 that puts out about 600 ponies. How BMW plans to have the B7 and M7 coexist remains a mystery, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Stay tuned for more details.
