Mitsubishi is in a world of hurt as of late, as it is having a tough time gaining any buyer interest with its relatively bland lineup. From the looks of things, and based on the recent unveiling of a more production-friendly version of the XR-PHEV Concept, it seems as if the company is attempting to rebrand itself as more of a green company. Until it can roll out a fully green lineup, the brand needs to continue upgrading its existing lineup.

First on the list for a much-needed refresh is its largest SUV, the Outlander, and a teaser image reveals that the new Outlander will be on display at the 2015 New York Auto Show on April 2nd. The Outlander remains one of the best values in the SUV realm, thanks to its relatively low price and long list of options, but its looks leave a lot to be desired. Though this teaser image doesn’t show much, it does seem as if this redesign may help give the Outlander a more desirable look.

Specifically, the grille looks more traditional, the headlights appear thinner and more angular, and the fascia appears to be a little sportier as a whole. There are no images of the back end, but recent spy shots showed larger taillights, a chrome strip, and a revised bumper.

What will power the 2016 Outlander remains a bit of a mystery for now, but chances are that we’ll see a plug-in hybrid version that uses technology borrowed from the XR-PHEV Concept at some point.

The 2015 Outlander features a pair of engine options. The base model uses a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Moving into the GT trim, the Outlander gets a 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 224 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. I expect these engines to carry over into the 2016 model year, as Mitsubishi is not in good enough financial health to develop new engines yet.

Stay tuned for more details.
