Mitsubishi Releases the Updated 2016 i-MiEV

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is often the forgotten member of the EV segment, and for good reason. It’s quirky, golf cart-like looks aren’t favorable to many, its low-powered motor is nothing to write home about, and its short range makes it tough to own as a daily commuter. Somehow, however, the model just keeps on ticking, and Mitsubishi has released the 2016 model with just a minor update.

One thing that the i-MiEV has long had in its favor is its low price, and that continues into the 2016 model year. The 2016 i-MiEV will start out at $22,995, and the total cost falls to $15,495 when you calculate in the $7,500 tax credit Uncle Sam gives you on your next year’s taxes. This can fall even further, depending on the credits your state gives you.

The changes for the 2016 model year are very slim. In fact, there is only one, and that’s the introduction of a new optional Navigation Package. This optional package adds in an MMCS navi system with a 7-inch touchscreen, real-time traffic, 3D mapping, Mapcare, Bluetooth hands-free, a USB port, and a rearview camera.

Other than that optional package, everything else carries over from the 2015 to the 2016 model year. This includes the electric motor that produces just 66 horsepower from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm and 145 pound-feet of torque from 1 to 300 rpm. The engine draws its power from a 16 kWh battery pack, which gives it an EPA-certified range of 62 miles. Its fuel economy equivalents are set at 126 mpg-e city, 99 mpg-e highway, and 112 mpg-e combined.
