Mazda has just relit the flame regarding the resurrection of the RX lineup today, as it announced that it will show off a new concept sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show. Along with the announcement came a teaser image that can get any sports car fan’s brain moving 200 mph.

While the details are scant regarding this new concept, the image is actually pretty telling. This concept will feature a cab-rearward design, a long hood, a swooping roofline, and a liftback-like rear end. If you look back to the original RX-7, these are all traits that the model had. These are also the traits that it lost as it went into its later generations.

The side of the concept car are super clean, as there are no crazy angles or body lines to distract you from the stunning roofline and hood. The rear fenders do have mild haunches, but nothing too overwhelming.

Around back, I can make out a pair of circular light clusters with two circular elements inside. Down below, I can see one circular exhaust tip, but it is too dark to make out much else.

There are no details surrounding the powertrain driving this concept, but I am willing to put a few bucks on it being a Skyactiv-R engine – the “R” stands for “Rotary,” of course. This engine will likely use high compression, lightweight rotors, and turbochargers (possibly electric ones) to keep fuel consumption and emissions to a minimum. What’s more, I am certain that over the past few years, Mazda has found a way to combat the rotary engine’s thirst for oil too.

I am wildly speculating here, but we won’t have to wait too long for the facts. The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show kicks off on October 30th. Stay tuned for more details.
