Mazda Talks About the 2016 MX-5’s New Audio System
Up until a few months ago, I was the owner of a Mazdasped Miata, and while I loved he car, the audio system left a little to be desired. This isn’t uncommon with convertibles, particularly with the top down. However, Mazda has outlined how it has improved the Bose audio system in the 2016 MX-5 for top-down driving.
The first step in creating perfect top-down driving is the equalizer settings. While you can do this manually, it becomes a little tedious to up the mids and highs every single time you drop the top. To compensate for this, Mazda has created two separate equalizer settings for the 2016 Miata, one for the top up and one when it’s down.
In my old 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, the closest speakers to my head were those mounted on the wind bar behind the seat. For 2016, Mazda went the route Pontiac did with the Fiero all those years ago and mounted two speakers In the headrest of each seat. Unlike the Fiero, these 2-inch UltraNearField speakers are specially designed to deliver full audio range and a surround-sound effect.
The other components that make up the MX-5’s audio system include 6.5-inch door-mounted speakers, 1-inch tweeters in the A-pillars, and a 5.25-inch woofer in a specially built, 6-liter enclosure under the front passenger footwell. A seven-channel Bose amp mounted where the top is stored powers these speakers.
Car audio systems have come a long way over the years, particularly factory audio systems. Seeing Mazda putting this much effort into just the stereo system of its new MX-5 Miata gives me confidence that the rest of the roadster is equally engineered to perfection, despite my gripes about its powertrain.
