So often when a concept car manages to beat all the odds and make it to production, the manufacturer scraps its conceptual name for a more conventional one. Well, Maserati isn’t your average automaker, and it’s not afraid of odd names (read: Ghibli). For this reason it’s no surprise to learn that the Alfieri will indeed retain its name once it makes its way down the production line.

The report from Autocar comes by way of Maserati’s marketing director, James Cowan. Also confirmed is a convertible version of the sharply designed Alfieri that is currently penciled in to debut in 2017, just one year after the coupe version arrives.

In speaking about the Alfieri, Cowan stated that the Alfieri will “have a halo effect,” which should help draw buyers into Maserati dealerships. Despite the attention that the Alfieri will get, Cowan has realistic expectations and does not anticipate the new sports car selling in great numbers. However, it will be a core vehicle that will anchor all of the brands values.

The hope of drawing buyers to dealerships is all part of Maserati’s plans to increase sales to 75,000 vehicles by 2018. Having a great lure like the Alfieri is one thing, but you also need a sharp hook to keep buyer in dealerships and buying cars to hit this number. Maserati plans to hook these fringe buyers with its Ghibli, which will have more engine options by 2018, and the upcoming Levante  SUV that is set to debut a year before the Alfieri.

The lure — AKA the Alfieri — will be rather tempting too, as it will not only look great, but it will also have a lineup of engines that will make any petrol-head drool. In its base format, the sports car will feature a 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 that cranks out 404 horsepower, while its range-topping all-wheel-drive version will hit dealers boasting either 440 or 513 ponies. Despite its status as a halo car of sorts, the Alfieri will be relatively affordable, with a starting price of around £60,000 ($93,864).

Maserati  certainly has some lofty goals for the near future, but it is doing all it can to make sure those goals are fulfilled.
