While Tesla’s been impressing quite a few people, another California automaker is starting to do the same, only in its own way. Lucid showed up at the Los Angeles Auto Show with a camouflaged prototype and immediately blew away people with how radically different it is from any Tesla.

This isn’t just another pipe dream company. Lucid lured away the head engineer for the Model S, Peter Rawlinson, as the CTO. His job is to completely rethink how cars are laid out. Admittedly, Teslas have pretty much adhered to the established “rules” of how cars are designed, only replacing the engine compartment up front with an additional trunk.

What Lucid is looking to do is push the boundaries further, thanks to the entire powertrain being in the chassis. The result is a prototype which is slightly larger than a Mercedes E-Class, but has the interior volume of an S-Class. Supposedly, this new car boasts about 1,000 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of under 3 seconds.

Lucid will be working with Sony and McLaren Applied Technologies to supply all batteries for the upcoming Formula E series. Its battery last twice as long as the one previously used. Range and recharge time are some big concerns for consumers, so Lucid might be able to thrive this way.

Journalists weren’t allowed to get into the prototype. Instead, Lucid had then experience it through a VR headset. Still, plenty were impressed with what they saw. Look for the new model to hit the streets in 2018.
